Have you picked up the latest copy of JLife? Here’s why you should.
- 1. Here Comes the Sun
What a week of weather it has been! Following a relatively warm weekend, the sun soon picked up its pace and we were treated to the hottest day on record. When you’re not sweltering in a working environment (those rotating fans are an encouraged investment), it’s worth making the most of the summer climate and partaking in some exciting new activities.
With this is mind, JLife’s summer-themed edition is sure to inspire! Parents can put an end to kids’ bored grumblings by treating them to a host of pursuits during the school break. Why not go along and cheer on the vast amount of rubber ducks being released into the River Irk at Chadderton Hall Park’s Duck Race & Fun Day? Or make a colourful statement with a backdrop of live entertainment courtesy of the Holi One Festival at Heaton Park?
This is just a snapshot of the fun-packed happenings across Manchester that JLife is delving into this issue!
But don’t fret adults, we haven’t forgotten about your year-long work that undoubtedly deserves summer treats too! Be it a quiet lunch taking in the scenery, or a lively meal with friends, al fresco dining is a must. Check out five of the best restaurants that will make for an enjoyable visit in the approaching months.
- 2. Life of the Party
Unbelievably, another year has swiftly passed, with this issue marking a return of JLife’s annual Bar/ Bat Mitzvah guide. Scan your eyes over the photo montage, find out how to recreate on-trend looks, and take a moment to reflect back on just what the occasion means.
We’ve also had the pleasure of working with the wonderful family of local girl Orli Edwards who recently celebrated her Bat Mitzvah. In a brand new feature, a number of her relations deliver a personal perspective into what the milestone means to them. Trust us – you don’t want to miss out on this sentimental read, and it might event spark some reminiscing within your own family,
- 3. Having a Word
Hot on the heels of Jurassic World, it’s safe to say that this season and cinematic blockbusters go hand in hand. But as well as that, the small screen has been offering up viewing delights, including the Channel 5 documentary, Inside Manchester’s Midland Hotel. JLife chats to its star – and general manager of the venue – Mike Magrane, about what the filming process entailed.
Additionally, award-winning businesswoman Rivka Rose discusses her thriving company, Faith in Nature; a brand of organic skincare products to ensure you’re at your glowing best.
Closer to home, get to know David Gaffin, Sainsbury’s Heaton Park’s first Jewish manager, who reveals all about his commitment to supplying kosher products across the community. He’ll also be offering one lucky JLife reader a fantastic prize – but there’ll be more on that later!
- 4. What’s New?
As always, the latest copy of JLife is filled to the brim with updates from across the community, be it short snapshots of news, or in-depth reviews of local events.
One of the stories striking a chord with us is the announcement of the Manchester Jewish Museum’s plans for development. Having received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, some of the changes are said to include a new visitor experience. The JLife office is sending huge congratulations to all the team at the site – and you can get the entire lowdown here.
We’re also inviting you to join in with the celebrations of Rabbi Sborovsky’s induction at Menorah Synagogue, and if you missed out on the recent Yom Ha’atzmaut gathering, we have all the latest on the committee’s new take on it.
The Manchester branch of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain are also reaching out for your help identifying the individuals featured in a picture that they stumbled across, taken in 1914. Click here to find out more about how you can lend assistance.
