Jess Goldstone of north Leeds’ Hebe Massage tells us about the benefits of massage therapy and offers one lucky reader the chance to win a full body massage worth £40.
Jess Goldstone, licensed massage therapist and owner of new north Leeds-based Hebe Massage, has always had an interest in massage, but it took moving to Leeds to make her dream a reality: “10 years ago I did an introductory course for massage, just to see whether I liked it, and for some reason I never went into it,” Jess explained. “I just got distracted with other things. I moved up to Leeds in October 2019 to be with my now husband. I got a job here but I was really unhappy in a nine to five job, and I felt like it wasn’t for me anymore. COMPETITION I thought to myself ‘Now is the time. I have the opportunity here to actually qualify as a massage therapist.’”
Unfortunately, setting up Hebe Massage hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing for Jess: “I qualified in October 2020, and then we went back into a lockdown. The whole opening of the business got delayed once again and then I got married in May, so that delayed it as well. I think it was in June that I finally did my website, started up my Instagram and actually got going. It was just word of mouth to start with. I was really surprised by how many clients I got so quickly. It’s really picked up popularity. I’m even offering gift cards now.”
Massage isn’t something that most people do regularly, but Jess is hoping she can change that: “I’m trying to encourage people to get massage into their normal routine. I want to make it affordable for people to get a massage once a month, or even once a week if they want to, which is why I keep the price of my services down.”
Regular massage treatments can have a lot of mental and physical benefits: “Physically, massage can help even skin tone, improve your circulation, help with lymphatic drainage, and it can even help with cellulite. If your muscles are short and tight it can relax them and lengthen them again. Mentally, massage relieves stress and anxiety, and gives you a sense of wellbeing. I recently qualified in pregnancy massage. Pregnancy can put quite a bit of strain on the body, so massage can really help manage that.”
Jess’s main focus is making sure that her clients get the relaxing experience they came for: “I’ve had clients before who can be a bit daunted by the idea, but I always say that if I’m doing something and they don’t like it, they should tell me immediately and we’ll stop. I think some massage therapists can have a little bit of a ‘one in, one out,’ mentality. I like to get to know my clients and really find out what they need, find out why they’re here and really help them. I don’t ever want them to feel like I’ve finished and they’re being rushed out the door. I’ve created a little hub where people can come and just relax.”
