Leading schools in the area celebrated fantastic A-level results for 2017.
Students across the region were poised to receive the results of their hard work over the last two years this summer, and success came to many for students in leading schools in Manchester.
One such pupil was Manchester High School for Girls’ Leah Bolchover from Cheadle, who secured two A*s in biology and religious studies and an A in chemistry. Leah will take up a place at the University of Bristol to study Medicine.
Leah said: “I love interacting with people and have always been passionate about helping those less fortunate so, coupled with my interest in all things science, Medicine seemed like the natural choice for me when it came to a career path.”
Meanwhile, Abbey College Manchester students are celebrating record breaking examination results in 2017. 34% of examinations taken scored an A* or A grade, 64% scored an A*, A or B grade and 85.1% of examinations taken scored A* – C grades. Students have gained entry to a wide range of competitive university courses including Medical, Biological, Physical and Computer Sciences, Engineering and Maths, Humanities, Economics, Accounting and Business and Art & Design. A statement from the school said: “An outstanding set of examination results have been achieved by our class of 2017. The college is very proud of their accomplishments and they reflect the hard work, the dedication and effort of the staff and the love and support of parents and guardians – all of us working together to achieve success.”
Sixth form students at Bury Grammar School celebrated another year of spectacular A-level results, including a 100% pass rate. More than a third of grades were A* and As, and 93% of pupils achieved an A grade in the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
Jo Anderson, principal and headmistress of Bury Grammar School, commented, “A-level results day is one of those dates in the diary which can change people’s lives. Behind the headlines are many stories of students who have overcome adversity and greatly outperformed expectations and we are immensely proud of all of them.”
Over at Cheadle Hulme School (CHS), students took up places at some of the country’s top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, and Exeter, as well as giving them the option to explore opportunities across a variety of industries including placements in Engineering and Computer Science.
Topping CHS’s results table was Alex Benton who received four A*s, while Matthew Brint received three A*s and A, with Alice Mee, Charlotte Brady, Lottie Needham, Alex Greig and Patrick Robbins all receiving three A* grades each. Alex Greig will be heading to Lancaster University to study Politics and Philosophy while Alex Benton is now preparing for a year in industry, working for a design agency in Cambridge.
Lucy Pearson, Cheadle Hulme School’s head, analysed this results: “As might be expected, the vast majority are now going on to take up their places at university, but there are also growing numbers who are choosing other paths and these results stand them in excellent stead, whether that is for apprenticeships, art foundation courses, work placements or a gap year. Having strong A-level results is about giving yourself options and CHS students have done precisely that.”
King David High School (KD) in Crumpsall also led the way with another set of outstanding A-level results, with the percentage of A* grades having doubled from the year before. 52% of grades were A or above at KD and around 78% were a B or above, while six of the eight students at KD who received Oxbridge offers will be taking up their places, with “virtually all” students having the grades needed for their choice university, said the chairman of governors, Joshua Rowe: “All the medical applicants and those for veterinary sciences have got their places,” he revealed. “I am delighted for our students and teachers at these outstanding results.” Joshua said.
KD A-level students Sabrina Kaye, with one A* and two As is going to the University of Bristol to study Dentistry and Danielle Jefferies achieved A*, A and B is also off to Bristol to read Psychology. Dalia Mann-Wineberg, with one A* and two As is off to the University of Manchester and will be the fourth generation in her family to study Medicine. Meanwhile, Tara Mofarah with one A, one B and one C will attend Birmingham City University to study Speech & Language Therapy. Abe Lisberg gained three A*s and is going to the London School of Economics to study Further Maths and Charlotte Zemmel three A* and two As will attend the University of Cambridge to read Natural Sciences.
Nathan Domnitz, Maxim Mallerman, Fabian Bor and Elliott Cohen all achieved four A*, while Thomas McGowan, Rachel Valins, Matt Handler and Sam Prais all attained three A*s each in their AS Level examinations, giving them an excellent footing for next year’s all-important A-levels.
Joshua continued: “We are hugely proud of the achievements of each and every one of our students. Three Bs, for certain students, can mean a lot more than three A*s for others and their efforts deserve every praise and accolade.”
