Major events for the Leeds Jewish community are lined up for the yearly Yoms, thanks to Makor.
An entertainment extravaganza will lead the celebrations for Israel’s independence day, Yom Ha’atzmaut, in Leeds on 9th May.
The evening, organised by Makor, will open at 6.30pm with Israeli street food and an array of kids’ entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. The main performance, which begins at 7.30pm, will star Israel’s top a capella group Quinta and a Half, headlining a show containing classic pop hits, original tracks and Israeli songs.
The Brodetsky Primary School choir will also grace the stage with a medley of uplifting catchy tunes and Amir Ben Hur, Leeds’ Israeli Shaliach, will host the evening.
On 1st May at 8pm, the community’s Holocaust memorial day, Yom Hashoah, will be held in memory of the millions that perished. A fascinating short film produced by The Zone’s Simon Harris and local creative company Inspire by EG, and with the help of young students from The Zone, will be screened.
The film documents the journey of one lady who boarded the Kastner train leaving Budapest for Switzerland on 30th June 1944 during the German occupation of Hungary. This captivating account, which took a surprising turn, is brought to us by Robert Dyson, her grandson who lives in Leeds. The following evening on 2nd May, Iby Knill, Holocaust survivor and author, will present ‘Story in Your Living Room’ – the telling of her personal story in an intimate setting.
Finally, on 8th May at 8pm, UJIA’s annual Magic Moments will feature a young delegation hailing from Israel to deliver the Yom Hazikaron ceremony to honour Israel’s fallen soldiers and the victims of terror.
