MJCC recently hosted ‘ShowBiz Lawyers’ featuring TV’s Judge Rinder and Gary Bell QC.
With a panel of distinguished legal experts from the world of TV and media, the latest Nicky Alliance Centre fundraiser was certain to entertain, and for the attending hundreds at Manchester Hall, it didn’t disappoint.
Welcoming guests, Nicky chief executive Michelle Wiseman thanked the panel of Robert Rinder, TV’s Judge Rinder, Gary Bell QC from BBC’s Legalizer, family law expert Marilyn Stowe and phone hacking guru Mark Lewis, and reiterated the need for funding, with a £30,000 deficit and a £2,500 per day running costs, the need for cash has increased as quickly the need to keep helping the community. New members are vital for continuity.
Chaired by journalist Nina Warhurst aided by roving mic Angela Epstein, the evening began with introducing the panel and rounding up their road to TV, a take on some of the latest news stories, moving to world affairs and more local issues. The panel shone throughout, with differing opinions and interesting stories. Rinder, himself of Jewish faith and his grandfather a holocaust survivor, talked passionately about topics including the Jewish responsibility to help refugees.
A question and answer session engaged with the audience, with questions around a variety of issues from the case involving Ched Evans to the panel’s most embarrassing moments. A young politics graduate asked about getting in to the legal world to which Rinder’s response was an absolute yes, however he did warn of the toughness of the industry – his chambers had interviewed 670 candidates for what ended up being just one job last year.
