One popular Hanukkah treat is sufganiyot, which are jelly-filled doughnuts. Here’s a simple recipe for making sufganiyot!
Ingredients:
- 500 grams all-purpose flour
- 75 grams granulated sugar
- 10 grams active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 250 ml warm milk
- 2 large eggs
- 50 grams unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Oil for frying
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- Fruit jam or jelly for filling
Instructions:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
- Add the activated yeast mixture, eggs, softened butter, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix well until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.
- Punch down the risen dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Use a round cookie cutter to cut out circles from the dough.
- Heat the oil in a deep fryer or a large, deep pan to 180°C.
- Carefully place the dough circles into the hot oil and fry each side until golden brown (about 1-2 minutes per side).
- Remove the fried doughnuts and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil.
- Once the doughnuts have cooled slightly, use a pastry bag to fill them with your favourite fruit jam or jelly.
- Dust the sufganiyot with powdered sugar before serving.
Enjoy your homemade Hanukkah doughnuts!
