Bring bright and bold colours into your home for spring with these nifty interior design tricks.

Using bold colour in our homes can be daunting, but unless we want our living room to look like an airport lounge, sometimes we just have to bite the bullet and take a risk. Thankfully, there are known tips and tricks to incorporate bright and bold colours into your home so you can choose whichever method works best for your space.

If you want to ease yourself into a colourful home, start by using colour in your accent pieces. This can be anything from brightly coloured cushions, vases, candles, or tableware. Because these small elements are interchangeable you can experiment with which colours suit your home and when you don’t like them anymore you can just swap them out!

Colour blocking

Choose one large space to paint but keep it simple with a block colour. Kitchen cabinets, bookcases, side tables and stair rails are a great opportunity to try your hand at adding a pop of bold colour, just make sure that the rest of your space is neutral, so the colour doesn’t overwhelm it.

Pictures and patterns

If you’re worried about having a bright colour looking out of place to the rest of its surroundings, having a colour anchor in the room such as statement picture, will ensure your choice of colour is consistent in the room. This can also be done with wallpaper patterns which allow you to have a small dose of bold colour without the commitment of colour blocking.

Get technical

Don’t trust your natural intuition to choose a colour? Then don’t leave it up to chance, look to the colour wheel! Find which colours compliment your chosen shade (opposite to yours on the colour wheel) or which will be analogous to create a harmonious palate (the two either side of your shade on the colour wheel). If you still don’t know which colours you like, Designer Noz Nozawa advises home decorators to go for a walk and be mindful which colours attract their attention and trigger their sense of natural beauty, incorporating these colours in your home will lift your mood and create calm.
