Leeds Jewish Welfare Board (LJWB) is as busy as ever…find out what’s been going on and what’s coming up!
LJWB hosted a powerful and uplifting evening as Dominic and Jess Matteo helped launch the charity’s 2026 mental health campaign.
Speaking candidly about his 2019 brain tumour diagnosis and recovery, the former Leeds United captain shared a moving account of resilience, vulnerability, and the importance of mental strength, with Jess offering her own heartfelt perspective. Their honesty, humour, and football stories captivated a packed room.
The night marked the beginning of LJWB’s three-day match-funded appeal, Support More Than One Life, which aims to raise £140,000 for its mental health services. Guests enjoyed a classic fish and chip supper from Leeds Kosher Kitchen (LKK).
A new phase of collaboration between LJWB and Leeds Jewish Housing Association (LJHA) is set to further strengthen community connections, enhance tenant experiences, and expand opportunities for meaningful volunteer involvement.
Building on a long-standing history of partnership, both organisations are proud to deepen their collaboration, reflecting the close relationship already shared across staff, service users, tenants, and volunteers.
The next step recognises the value of working more closely together to deliver an even greater impact across the community. LJHA will benefit from expanded access to LJWB’s expertise, enabling more effective use of volunteers to support tenants and strengthen community life for residents.
LJHA currently runs several activities both within its sheltered housing schemes and within the wider resident community but is now looking to expand this further through this initiative.
The initiative aims to deliver several key benefits for tenants, including a more welcoming moving experience, helping those who may need additional help settle into their homes with confidence and care. There’ll also be light-touch, friendly volunteer support to promote independence and wellbeing, increased social connection to foster a stronger sense of belonging, and inclusive celebration of cultural and seasonal events to bring people together and strengthen community spirit.
The Creative Craft Group was thrilled to be invited to create a collaborative collage for the launch of Jewish Culture Month.
Rebecca, Dan Cohen, and Mel took the artwork to the celebration launch at Leeds Civic Hall which highlighted 400 years of Jewish contribution to Leeds – a milestone the community is honoured to be part of.
The Creative Craft Group takes place on Fridays 10.30am to 12pm where a new and exciting project is completed in each session and all are welcome!
And coming up soon… LJWB offers a programme of regular outings, giving people the chance to get out, connect with others, and enjoy a refreshing break from daily routine. All trips are supported by staff and volunteers, include coach travel, and are fully accessible for wheelchair users.
The next dates are a trip to Harlow Carr Gardens on 25th August, shop ‘til you drop at White Rose Shopping Centre on 6th October, and the green-fingered among us will enjoy a visit to a garden centre on 17th November.
Save the date for an afternoon of the Jewish contribution to Leeds through arts, culture, and community on 18th October from 11am to 3pm.
The event will feature an art exhibition showcasing a range of talented artists and unique works, as well as an art sale, auction, arts and craft workshops and stalls, and delicious food by LKK.
