With school budgets slashed by 30% by the Department of Education, King David High School’s governors decided to take matter into their own hands and raise the funding shortfall by kickstarting a bold fundraising goal of £1.2 million, the estimated loss of budget to the Jewish faith school.
A statement from the school went into further detail about why the funding was necessary:
“Our outstanding academic results always place us at the very top of the national league tables. The way we have maintained the standards is by drastically reducing overheads…with the support of those parents who make voluntary contributions and with the support of some very generous donors.
“However, the deficit keeps growing and that is why, after three years since our last appeal, we now have to turn to parents, former parents, grandparents, alumni, friends and the whole community for support.”
Hatching a plan for a quick-fast charity drive – £1.2 million in 36 hours – in early February, every donation pledge was matched by a host of generous benefactors including Beaverbrooks, Investream, Lionel Black Foundation, Reich Insurance Brokers and Searchlight Electric.
Joshua Rowe, chair of governors at King David led the team of volunteers based within the drama suite at the school in Crumpsall. The epic donation dash resulted in a staggering £1,205,243 in one and a half days. At the time of going to print, the total has risen to £1,229,098.
