Manchester Maccabi is back with a bang. JLife finds out more about what’s lined up at the lively community hub this spring.
First up, live and kicking, Krav Maga is back and after braving the unpredictable spring weather in the car park, participants will be glad to know sessions will return indoors – but be quick to book, as social distancing means places are limited.
While also making a welcome reappearance is the club’s 24-hour Football Challenge. Postponed from May, the fundraising event now been confirmed for 3rd to 4th July and is in aid of a new AstroTurf pitch replacement, costed at £100,000, 50% of which will be matched by the FA. Players of any age are welcome to take on the challenge which will run overnight throughout the weekend. The £25 entrance fee includes refreshments and physio, and sponsorship opportunities are available, priced at £200 and upwards.
Another way to enjoy the beautiful game while supporting worthwhile charities is by taking part in the club’s joint fundraising project Just For Kicks, run in collaboration with Jerusalem medical relief organisation Hadassah UK. To play the game, each week when your favourite team win, you put £2 away to donate, and each time one of your rival teams lose, you put £4 away. Based on the results and how many rival teams you choose, you could be donating at least £6 a week to be split equally between the two charities.
It’s not all about sports, as Chorus UK has recently become Manchester Maccabi’s choir in residence. Running inclusive weekly sessions, participants need not audition or read music to join. Focused on fun and friendship, repertoires will vary with a mixture of styles, each 12-week term culminating in a showstopping public performance.
If all this activity has got you working up an appetite, the club’s own pop-up street food concept, Social Square by Ed Shaerf has returned with outdoor seating and a fresh spring menu. From spit-roast lamb tacos with pineapple salsa at Latino outlet Cabana, to old school meatloaf sliders with pastrami spiced crispy onions from traditional fress spot Street Food, there’s something for everyone to enjoy al fresco.
Most importantly, to maintain and expand its programme of activities, the club needs your help. By signing up for the Maccabi Monthly Campaign, you can ensure the communal hub is here for the next generation as it continues to provide a safe exciting environment for the city’s Jewish community.
