Sweeping in from a sell-out summer at the West End, Cole Porter’s High Society takes to the stage at Leeds Grand Theatre. Plans for the wedding of the year soon turn to madness and misbehaviour as old flings appear and an undercover reporter searches for scandal at the extravagant estate.
Leading actress Helen George seamlessly steps into the role of socialite Tracy Samantha Lord, bringing sublime vocals and acting to the stage. She is joined by rising star Freddie Fox, known for his recent performance in House of the Dragon. His theatrical debut as the struggling writer Mike Connor is charming and hilarious, prompting attention to the character even as he performs in the background.
The standout of the musical is Julian Ovenden’s Dexter – Tracy’s ex-husband who seemingly changes for the good, after alcohol destroyed their marriage. Ovenden’s vocals are raw and powerful, showcasing a desire to amend his relationship to a character we deeply sympathise with. His performance is littered with charming quips, bringing depth to his character as he switches between humour and intimate sadness.
Divine in dance numbers and jazz, the musical is heavenly – vocal performances are strong from the entire cast, and you simply cannot take your eyes away from each character.
