Serving It Up

With tennis season in full flow, find out how to throw the perfect Wimbledon party.

Wimbledon is the ideal time to plan a gathering of your friends and family for a celebration of tennis, tradition, and British summer vibes! Whether you’re a fan or just love a good party, JLife’s guide to hosting the ultimate tennis- themed bash will have everyone saying, ‘Game, Set, Match!’ So, grab your tennis whites, pour yourself a Pimm’s, and get ready to celebrate in style!

Setting the scene

While your guests won’t be expecting perfectly manicured lawns like the ones at the All-England Club, having your outdoor space in tip top condition will make a good first impression.

So, take some time to mow the lawn, trim the hedges, and dig out the weeds to create an inviting atmosphere. Set up plenty of seating – outdoor tables and patio chairs for eating, garden sofas, loungers, or beanbags for chilling – you could even grab a couple of hay bales and cover them with throws. If your party day is cooler, consider providing blankets to keep the chill at bay.

Create a festive atmosphere by decorating your space in Wimbledon’s trademark green and purple colours or go all out with a Union Jack theme and a riot of red, white, and blue! If you have enough space, set up a viewing area with TV and seating so guests can watch some of the action. For an extra touch try tennis ball balloons around the party area and use rackets and balls as centrepieces on your table. Consider setting up a photo booth with tennis-themed props for fun photos that your guests can take home as mementos.

Given the unpredictable British weather, it’s probably a good idea to have a Plan B in the shape of a covered area or small marquee in case rain stops play.

Dress code

Are you going high end or casual? Whatever you decide, encouraging your guests to dress in tennis whites will add to the fun. Think crisp white shorts, summer dresses, or even sports-inspired outfits for a touch of Wimbledon style.

Food and drink

It wouldn’t be Wimbledon without Pimm’s. The Original Pimm’s No 1 is traditionally topped with lemonade or can be made using ginger beer. If you’re really pushing the boat out, A Pimm’s Royale is made using Champagne instead of lemonade. Whichever you decide, don’t forget to top up your creation with fresh mint leaves, chopped strawberries, sliced orange, chopped cucumber and plenty of ice.

When it comes to food it has to be the classic Wimbledon dessert – strawberries and cream! Arrange platters of juicy strawberries alongside bowls of whipped cream for a delicious and traditional treat. Include other British summer treats such as cucumber sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, and Victoria sponge.

Activities

Keep your guests entertained with fun Wimbledon-themed activities and games that everyone can enjoy. Set up a mini tennis court and organise a friendly tournament for your guests. You could even award prizes to the winners to add to the competitive spirit. How about some fun bingo cards with tennis-related words and phrases for guests to mark off while watching the matches. It’s a fun way to get everyone involved and engaged in the action. For younger guests, consider setting up a treasure hunt or other Wimbledon-themed games to keep them entertained and active throughout the day.
