As the autumn leaves begin to fall, JLife takes a look at home interiors trends and key tips for the new season.
There is a chill in the air and we can see our breath billowing before us. It can only mean one thing: summer is gone for another year and autumn has arrived in its place, filled with crisp leaves and bare trees. With the changing season comes the desire to spruce up the home, so if you are looking for inspiration or want some practical advice about protecting your property from the extreme weather, allow JLife to provide a guide to the upcoming trends.
Natural Blues
Claire Hornby, creative and display manager for independent furniture retailer Barker and Stonehouse, reveals the trends that will be coming into the home this autumn/ winter.
As the new season approaches interior trends change to adapt to the colder surroundings. However, while it may not be plausible to change larger pieces of furniture depending on the weather, it is possible to alternate accessories and lighting.
With throw cushions suddenly shifting from creams to darker tones of greys to create a more homely feel, the blankets are also pulled out and casually draped over the back of opulent armchairs and sofas to ensure easy access when snuggling up by the fire. This autumn we will be seeing a lot of charcoal grey, particularly when it comes to rugs.
The most sought after material at the moment is distressed wooden furniture as it is effortlessly stylish and a brilliant way to add an interesting texture to the home. I love how these elements add to the natural charm of a room; there’s something really special about owning furniture that has its own unique character.
Warm metal tones like brass and copper are a big trend right now, giving a softer take on industrial chic that works well in any room. The copper will complement dark bed frames and neutral walls perfectly by adding a much-needed touch of luxury to a space.
How a room is lit changes the entire perspective of how it looks and, as the dark nights draw in, lighting becomes increasingly more important. This winter it is all about candles. They can be used to create a feature whether they are displayed in candle holders or left freestanding. An example of this is to group ivory-coloured pillar candles in front of a candelabra to create a pleasant glow – just remember to protect your furniture from the wax.
If you’re feeling brave (and have the space and correct fittings), make a feature by grouping ceiling lights in different shapes, sizes and materials together to hang over bedside tables. Try hanging them at different heights to add interest to the look.
If you have a high ceiling, opt for a statement chandelier in interesting materials like rope, metal or glass – and continue the theme throughout the other lighting options in the room.
