Tucked into the Irwell Valley on the edge of Greater Manchester, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall are a pair of charming market towns guaranteed to tempt you back.
Two market towns just minutes from North Manchester offer the ideal day out for families, shoppers, and leisure visitors alike, both set in beautiful open moorland, scenic walking trails, and sweeping valley viewpoints.
You could be forgiven for not having Ramsbottom – or Rammy, as it’s affectionately known – high on your radar. Nestled between the moorland and the River Irwell, it’s the kind of place that tends to be discovered rather than publicised. But those who make the trip never regret it. The town has built one of the most enticing independent food and drink scenes in Greater Manchester, paired with a genuine community spirit, year-round events, and great countryside on the doorstep.
History lovers will feel right at home in Ramsbottom, a town whose roots stretch back to the Industrial Revolution. During the 19th century, it thrived as a bustling centre of industry, with prominent cotton mills like the Ramsbottom Paper Mill and the Grant Brothers Mill powering its economy. These mills didn’t just provide employment – they helped shape the town itself, inspiring the rows of terraced houses built for workers, many of which still stand today. While the mills have long since ceased operation, their legacy lives on in the town’s architecture and the stories passed down through generations.
The East Lancashire Railway runs steam and diesel trains through Ramsbottom and on to Rawtenstall. Nuttall Park has riverside walks, a play area, and a bandstand, while Holcombe Hill and Peel Tower reward the short climb with panoramic moorland views.
No visit to either town would be complete without experiencing the railway. Its heritage steam trains remain one of the area’s most iconic attractions, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region’s industrial past. It also boasts a packed schedule of family events throughout the summer including popular character experiences featuring Peppa Pig, Thomas the Tank Engine, and other themed activities.
Rawtenstall’s unique combination of cafés, restaurants, heritage attractions, community events, and stunning surrounding Pennine scenery. Whether you’re looking for a family day out, a weekend stroll, great food and drink, or unique independent shopping, the town offers something for all ages and interests.
At the heart of Rawtenstall is Bank Street, a cobbled stretch lined with family-run cafes, artisan bakeries, vintage shops, relaxed bars, and restaurants. Just around the corner sits Mr Fitzpatrick’s Temperance Bar, proudly holding the title of Britain’s last temperance bar.
A short stroll from the centre leads to Whitaker Park, home to The Whitaker Museum. Recently refurbished and free to enter, the museum presents local heritage alongside touring exhibitions and events. The park is home to a mix of facilities, including tennis courts, scenic dog-walking routes, modern play areas for children, and welcoming community yoga sessions designed for all ages and abilities.
The heart of the town is Rawtenstall Market, supported and cared for by Rossendale Borough Council. It’s currently trading from a temporary home in the town square while the 120-year-old Market Hall undergoes refurbishment, with a return to its original home planned for 2027.
Rawtenstall celebrates its unique character and embraces its own identity, combining culture, community, and countryside to offer a destination for all ages, occasions, and interests.
