Bringing the Heat

Councillor for Alwoodley Dan Cohen discusses the recent heatwave, LS17’s charms, and school admissions.

I am writing this column as we are heading into the warmest spell of weather we have seen for quite some time (with red weather warnings due to the heat). Being Britain, this could be the last time we see any sun until September, or we could spend the whole summer melting away (watching on in distress as our beloved lawns turn evermore brown).

Alwoodley Park and Ride Given Green Light

22 October 2019

In any event, here we are, summer at last, and however you are spending it or planning on spending it, I hope for the first year in some time, all is going to plan. Looking at the news, travelling by air through one of our airports may well be a source of strain and consternation, so I’m delighted to focus on all Leeds 17 has to offer. Who needs the delights of Cannes, Marbs, or Martinique when we have our own Darcy, Dexter, and the New Inn, along with a whole host of eateries.

On 21st August, Band on the Green returns to the Alwoodley Village Green. This summer fixture hosted by Alwoodley Parish Council is always great fun and this year promises to be no different.

It seems crazy to be saying this but for those with youngsters going into Year 6, the time for applying to high school for September 2023 is almost upon us (the deadline to apply is 31st October). This special education edition of JLife has lots of helpful information about schools in our area.

If I may give one piece of advice (born of many years of trying to assist parents), do use all five of your high school preferences on your application form. Do not assume you will simply get your preferred or nearest school – hopefully you will – but better safe than sorry. If there is help or guidance you may want from me, please don’t hesitate to give me a call.

Do remember, Neil, Peter, and myself are always here for any and all of your local issues, so if you need us, do get in touch.

Finally for this month, with Rosh Hashanah at the end of September and this being the Rosh Hashanah edition of JLife, Neil, Peter, and I wish all those who are celebrating a happy, healthy, peaceful, and prosperous new year.
