A violin which was played in a concentration camp during the Holocaust was donated to King David High School at its winter concert.
The instrument was owned by Siegmund Feitl, who was born in Vienna in 1876. When the Nazis occupied Austria during the Second World War, Siegmund, who performed in nightclubs throughout Vienna, was sent to Theresienstadt, in the present-day Czech Republic. The violin eventually passed to his daughter, Margaret Gibson, who died 10 years ago. Margaret’s husband, Peter, donated the violin to King David School after meeting head teacher Tracy Basger on a cruise.
The donation took place at the winter concert where Dr Andrew Walker played the Schindler’s List theme on the violin.
