Putting Down Roots

The summery botanical trend is testament that our love of nature continues to blossom…

Our homes continue to be an oasis of plants, as the trend for bringing nature into our homes grows and grows. Pinterest predicts vertical gardens are an emerging new trend, with searches up 287%. By planting upwards instead of outwards, you’ll be equipped with enough space to plant fresh herbs, healing plants, tons of different types of flowers, inside or outside. Whether the vertical climb is to create more of a statement with greenery or utilising small spaces, the only way is up for plants!

This uplifting trend is a joyous celebration of nature. Botanical prints, along with a strong painterly element are the key motif throughout this look, whether real or as part of a fabric or wallpaper design. Bold wallpapers, such as tropical leaves are going from strength to strength this season and vibrant bold prints can breathe new life into rooms, big or small.

Part of the ‘Botanist’ range in Very.co.uk’s spring/summer collection, the online retailer has completely embraced the craze for bringing the outside in, promoting cane style seating, traditional hanging planters and plenty of jute. Though you might not want to go overboard with the indoor plants (think of all the watering you might have to do)!

(1) Circle jute rug: £99.99. (2) Green stripe jute storage basket: £15. (3) Seagrass hanging planter: £15. (4) Cane style bistro chairs and table: £199.99. (5) Candle holders with concrete base: (two) £45. (6) Mikasa drift medium bowls (four): £15.99 & Mikasa drift side plates (four): £15.99.

JLife has certainly noticed the growth of beautiful plant shops in Leeds that are treating shoppers to a
different experience from the usual garden centres of old…

Short Press – 404 Burley Road, Burley
A plant shop that’s pulling in the millennials of Burley and beyond, Short Press, founded by Leeds College of Art graduate Lydia Wilford, is certainly here to stay. Sourcing local products, Short Press is an independent retailer of popular and exotic house plants. From old favourites like the aloe and the monstera, to their more rare, tropical cousins, ethically sourced shrubs from around the globe, there are plants-a-plenty to brighten up your home.

The Plant Point – Corn Exchange, Call Lane
A jungle in the heart of Leeds, The Plant Point within the Corn Exchange specialises in awesome and unique potted indoor plants, succulents and cacti, as well as fresh flower bouquets to order. Established by sisters Sonia and Ada after not being able to source a hoya — a tropical climber that bears waxy flowers – in the city centre, two months later they created an indoor jungle on the balcony of the iconic Leeds shopping quarter.

The Perfumed Garden – 19 Harrogate Road, Chapel Allerton
The Perfumed Garden in Chapel Allerton first opened its doors in 1997, and is an established independent florist known for its beautiful floral arrangements for special and solemn occasions. Recently the team has set up a pop-up shop at John Lewis at Victoria Gate, introducing Leeds city shoppers to the joys of potted plants, succulents and unusual cacti and creating flowerboxes to go.
