Over £2,000 was raised at a Maccabi football gala involving youngsters from across the north of the UK.
Leeds Maccabi FC hosted a football gala which included 36 teams from across Leeds, Manchester Maccabi, South Manchester and Glasgow. 300 children aged six to 15 years attended the tournament at Henry Cohen Campus which included a huge barbeque effort by the organisers.
The trophies were well spread, as Leeds won the under-10s age group, Glasgow won the under-15s age bracket, while the other age groups were won by Manchester teams. This is the fourth year that this cross-communal annual event has taken place and the second time that Leeds hosted the tournament. The organising committee from Leeds consisted of co-chairs of Leeds Maccabi, Ben Lyons and Charlie Rosenberg, alongside Elliot Landy, Donna Pullan, Sarah Barron, Ian Selwyn, Alex Ullmann, Bryan Gothelf and Gavin Miller.
The event’s main sponsor was Alton Cars, and over £2,000 was raised which will go towards funding equipment for Leeds Maccabi. Co-chair Ben Lyons, commented: “It was a special occasion, giving 300 Jewish kids the opportunity to play football and forge strong friendships with children from different cities. “This gala is clearly the highlight of the football calendar for players, coaches and parents, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event.”
