Milim, the Leeds Jewish literary movement, returns for its third annual month-long festival in February.
Milim, the Leeds festival of Jewish words, has released a diary of events for its 2018 edition.
With a raft of top literary guests, the festival is back for its third year. The celebration, dedicated to showcasing Jewish writing talent, begins on 11th February 2018 and will run until mid-March, with events taking place at venues across the city.
The grand opening event for this year is the premiere of All I Wanted Was A Doll, a play by local writer Brian Daniels, who has been specially commissioned to pen a script celebrating 140 years of the Leeds Jewish Welfare Board. This production will take place in the Riley Theatre at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. Previously, performances of another of Brian’s works, Bounce Back Boy, played to full houses during Milim 2017.
The festival also kicks off with the launch of an interfaith cookery book, as a joint venture between Milim and Makor, the Jewish culture office for Leeds. Food lovers can also get their teeth into a session entitled My Relationship With Food – The Art of Mindful Eating, which will see food expert and JLife contributor Lisa Roukin, interviewed by Fran White on 20th February.
Further February literary offerings include Under The Heel of Hirohito, a talk on how a local Leeds doctor coped with life as a Japanese prisoner of war, and the return of the Milim staple, Poetry Café, at which poetry both old and new will be read aloud by poets and performers.
Notable authors and speakers taking part in the festival include award-winning poet Josh Seigal and Canadian writer Ami Sands Brodoff, who will talk about her new novel, In Many Waters, which tells story of three orphans whose lives intersect on the island of Malta. While, recent JLife interviewee and Leeds-born author Abi Silver also takes part with a discussion about her debut crime novel, The Pinocchio Brief, at The Leeds Library on 21st February.
