The West Yorkshire Playhouse is set to host a multicultural variety show featuring performances from the community. JLife reports.
Makor Jewish Culture has teamed up with South Asian Arts UK (SAA UK) to stage The Multicultural Variety Show to celebrate Leeds and its wide-ranging communities on 14th July at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.
Local Jewish performers will showcase their talents alongside members of the Asian, Chinese, Eastern-European and Caribbean communities.
Presented by Yorkshire comedian, Howard Lee, the show will feature a variety of artists including Alby Chait and the UHC Synagogue Choir, plus vocalist Sarah Yaseen. Regional favourites such as the Northern Ballet Academy, Huddersfield Community Gospel Choir and Leeds Baltic Performing Arts School will be joined by SAA UK North Indian Kathak Dancers and The Chinese Lion Dance Troupe.
Ellie Ruhan, programme director, said: “The line-up of performers for the show reflects Leeds as it really is – a multicultural, fast-paced, developing and ever-evolving city. Each community is brimming with pride at the opportunity to showcase its culture.”
This is the first time the show has been premiered at the West Yorkshire Playhouse due to high demand. Ellie explained that last year’s show in Roundhay was a sell-out and audiences were turned away due to a packed house: “The move to the West Yorkshire Playhouse allows us to expand the show, take advantage of the great technical facilities on offer to deliver a professional, first-rate performance.”
Theatre-goers are invited to indulge in an ‘around the world’ mezze platter on offer at the theatre café before the show and during the interval.
