Children’s book writer of A Series of Unfortunate Events, Lemony Snicket, otherwise known as Daniel Handler, is writing a horror film about the famous Jewish legend The Golem of Prague.
The Frankenstein-esque legend dates back to the 16th century where, during the reign of Rudolf II, Rabbi Judah Loew created the golem (a clay figure) to protect the Jewish quarter from on-going antisemitic threat. Once the figure was brought to life he got out of control and began attacking people, he was then executed by his creator.
The film, which will be made with independent Jewish film company Leviathan Productions, will update the story to modern day, focusing on a young woman on a college campus who comes across a figure with a mysterious past.
