The latest Leeds Wizo event featured guest speaker Shazia Tariq, a beloved local newsagent with plenty of stories to share.
On 25th February Leeds Wizo held a speaker function at the home of one of its members. The group invited Shazia Tariq to come and talk about her fascinating life. Shazia runs Slaid Hill newsagents and is well-known in the Alwoodley area. She regularly receives comments, birthday wishes, condolences, and greetings over social media on most days of the week. Not limited to online, Shazia is also often seen visiting shiva houses of families who she has come to know very well over the years. As you can imagine she has really endeared herself to the Jewish community.
Shazia is acquainted with thousands of children around the area who make a habit of calling in to her shop as they know that there is always a bar of chocolate awaiting them on their visit to her. She listens to their problems and tries to help them solve them.
Sam Walton was the opener for the evening, and she told the group how much Shazia meant to her and her family. Carol Gold, one of Wizo’s members, interviewed Shazia and together they gave an amusing and interesting insight into how Shazia had come to England and made a wonderful family life here.
The evening had an excellent turnout and Lucille Winburn gave a vote of thanks for what was an extremely successful evening producing greatly needed funds for Wizo projects in Israel.
